The Beginning

The Know Orchestra seeks a new kind of music that breaks through the boundaries of chamber music, jazz and free improvisation. Blending and overlapping genres, the Know Orchestra has a penchant for absurdist humor, spoken word and performance art. Their music explores the unexpected beauty in the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas and searches for meaningful expression in a contemporary idiom. Their unique timbrel nuances unfold using violin, clarinets, french horn and a hybrid percussion set up of home made instruments, glockenspiel, an old metal box, cymbals and a snare drum. Who is the Know? Well The Know Orchestra loves to find the music in between, a place where jazz improvisation, classical music, world music and micro-tonal idioms exist at the same time.
The Know Orchestra is: Ima Jonsdottir on violin, Dan Shaud on french horn, Todd Brunel on clarinets and Gary Fieldman on those percussion instruments mentioned earlier....
We are currently working on a series of children's concerts and would love to share one of our latest works, something Gary wrote called Twinkle.
The Know Orchestra is a four piece group that represents the four major categories in a symphony orchestra. The String section, the woodwinds, the brass and percussion. We've just left out the maestro, well because who needs him/her anyway? Well of course if you watch our latest Youtube clip, you'll see Gary (who composed this work) as the maestro (we let him!).
